A friend of mine used to use a program called 'Vtune' to up his fan speed when gaming. But since a format he no longer has the software.

Does anyone know of any opensource alternatives? Or alternative methods?

His fans are not speeding up when he goes into games and as a result he is overheating and crashing out within 5 minutes.

Thanks,

Majik/Jonny

Speedfan is a good option, doesn't work with all motherboards though, so may need some testing, but worth a shot.

Alternatively a manual fan controller is always an option too, but will cost money.

A fan Controller is best in my opinion.

I got an akasa Fan controller. Bought it for about £15. Controls 4 fans and shows the speed and temp of each. Does require 5 mins of sticking your thermal pads inside but its well worth it. Its lasted me 2 years with no problems.
