I currently have 1 x 120mm fan drawing air out the back of my case , 1 x 80mm fan drawing air in at the front and 2 x 80mm fans drawing air in from the side. Is this correct, if not what is the ideal orientations?

A lot of people say that having fans on the side of the case ruin the air flow compared to just front-in back-out. How true that is I don't know

It does however keep the graphics card cool so it is worth it I guess

My fan layout is 1x120mm drawing in at the front, 1x120mm blowing out at the back and a fan at the top of the case at stupidly low RPM (like 500rpm or something so I don't hear it) drawing the hot air that rises to the top of the case out

Sounds about right, in my case I have 2 x 80mm fans drawing air in, 1 x 80mm fan at the rear drawing air out and 1 x 80mm fan on the top of the case again drawing the hot air out.

This depends on the CFM (cubic feet per minute - amount of air they push) of the fans. The closer you get to a 1:1 ratio between CFM in and CFM out the more air is moved. Be aware that having an air flow plan is also important - two fans competing for air is bad and 2 fans circulating air through an area with no hot components is bad.

A slightly positive pressure (CFM in > CFM out) can reduce dust when the fans have filters.

Be aware of holes in your case where air can escape. If you have air pushed in at the front and side it is possible that the front fan will have very little impact as most of the pressure escapes through holes in the front part of your case.
