Fan/Hard Drive placement

Hi,

I'm doing a bit of case tidying/cable planning in preparation for my new motherboard later today, but am having problems with the hard drive cage fouling the power cables to my graphics card (HD4870).

I'm using a Thermaltake Armour case. My question is, does the hard drive actually need a fan running over it? Annoyingly the intake fan which brings air onto the graphics card is attached to the hard drive cage, which is causing the problem. I've got a tray to mount a single HDD outside of the cage which I intend to do, but will this damage the drive?

Thanks.

As long as there is some movement of air over the hard drive things should be ok. The tray you attach the drive to should dissipate some of the heat as well. Give it a try and monitor the temperatures. Anything in the 20s,30s is fine, once you get into the high 40s and 50s then you need to get some active cooling on/over it. Hard drives only dissipate a couple of watts of heat at most so you should be ok.
