thinking of getting the Vantec Nexus NXP201 which seems quite popular around here, just wondering do you think its worth getting an additional device in the bays that measures heats and reports back or is that just a useless gimmick? i know you can check temps with software or more accurately the bios

I've had a couple of these things in the past but now regard them as an unnecessary encumbrance to a system. I have three 120mm fans in my case that I now control through the motherboard hardware. My system is as near as dammit silent and the CPU seldom exceeds 41c under sustained load. Frankly these multicoloured, multidialled fan controllers are pseudo technical bling that give users an illusion of having control of something meaningful. But if bling's your thing and provided you've not stolen the cash from your Granny's life savings, why not?

Thats an interesting motherboard you have :D Not every motherboard allows control unfortunately but I agree software based systems can work best
