Fan/light controller question

I'm planning a build and want to have the fans & lights controlled by the same controller. It would need to be able to control speed and light strength.

I have a couple of questions which if you could help would be great:

First is there a software/hardware solution for lights and fans that can do this all in one package?

What would happen if I just connected up lights to a fan controller? Would this work the way I want?
