I have been running my "Ultima Vanquish" for a while now and the performance is faultless for my requirements (i7 920 DO 2.66 [email protected]) but the noise :eek:.
The CPU cooler is a Noctua NH-U12P Dual Fan Quiet pardon :confused: (small print words - not mine) CPU Cooler.
This is running in an Antec300 case with front and rear fans and with the twin fans of the 5870 it sounds like a geo-thermal central heating unit and my nether regions freeze regularly with the draught under the desk :rolleyes: .
There is nothing listed under Components > Cases > Noise dampened cases - so - what to do?
Water cooling will only get rid of 1 x 120mm fan (I think) so a special case would seem to be the answer, but which?

Use headphones - I used to care about the fan noise, but now it's lovely.

In all seriousness though, the Antec 300 is not exactly a quiet case - the Antec P183 is meant to be the best 'quiet case'.

Noctua fans are pretty good and quiet, but it might be worth looking at some Scythe fans, or some of the other really quiet fans around.
 
;) My original intention was to accept the stock case and re-fit everything into my old case but the huge CPU cooler knocked that idea on the head. My old case, from another well known manufacturer, has double skin sides and is steel as opposed to the alloy of the 300, so maybe I should use that with a w/c on the CPU.
I wondered if there were any cure everything cases around, that's all.
 
What is the loudest, case fans or graphics card fans ?

You can 7v the case fans easy enough, or get a fan controller.
 
Are you sure it's the CPU fan and not the case fans? Those standard Antec fans are pretty loud especially if they are on the high speed setting. Would be worth opening the case and checking if they're on high.
 
its prob the cooler on the 5870 makeing all the noise! a twin cooler? mine had 1 fan on it but it neve saw light of day as its watercooled
 
I'm sure it's a combination of all the fans (1 case rear, 1 case front, 1 each side of the CPU cooler rad, the 5870 and the PSU).
Fan controller :confused: bit of a newb in this area. Explain please.
 
HAz - it's some weeks since I last saw it when I installed it. I think it has two fans but maybe it was two exhausts!
 
:) Just had a good read and the Scythe Kaze-Master seems to fit the bill.
Anyone using this and can/cannot spec me?
 
Noisiest thing in my machine atm is the psu :rolleyes:

I bought a fan controller, turned everything down, turned the gfx card fan to min using rivatuner, and my pc still sounds like a hoover :(
 
Thanks everyone. I was just about to re-boot into BIOS to see if there were any monitors. I will also have a look at the speedfan link later, thanks for that. On my old rig there was something called PC Probe I think, but I never used it.
I have enough to go on for now. Maybe I don't even need the front case fan - until you start monitoring temperatures how can you know :confused:
(Must admit the Fan Controller looks pretty cool if you forgive the pun :D)
 
You really need to identify the source of the noise before you can eliminate it. For weeks after I installed my old 8800GT, I was convinced it had increased my PC's overall noise output considerably. After I actually took the time to check each component, I found it was my CPU cooler's fan on it's last legs. Replaced the fan, and it was suddenly near silent :)
 
I simply disconnected the front case fan (from mobo SYS Fan1) and the wind noise has reduced considerably.
It would appear the rear case fan, connected to (mobo NB Fan), and the fan on the rear of the cpu cooler rad (connected to mobo on SYS Fan3) are permanently on 100%. The fan on the front of the cpu cooler rad is connected to (mobo CPU Fan) as you would expect and may or may not vary speed depending on CPU heat - not sure of this.
Should the rear case fan be on a SYS Fan connection and not on the NB Fan connection or doesn't it matter?
Mobo = GA-EX58.

There doesn't appear to be a North Bridge fan on the mobo.
The reason I asked is because it would appear some of the fans, namely CPU and SYS, have certain controllability by settings in BIOS but I never noticed settings for the NB Fan therefore whatever is connected to the NB Fan connection will be 100% all the time right?
