Fan Noise

Turn it back around and use it as exhaust. Is it an older fan or a new one?

In one position the fan bearing is making contact with something, in the other doesn't.

Also some fans just aren't good in the horizontal plane and after a while will develop this.

Thanks Tealc, so is this considered normal? It's still under warranty.

I've had fans do this from new, although it wasn't as bad as yours. It may have got worse over time but I didn't give it a chance and mounted it vertically, and then after a while removed it completely as the fan didn't run well at low speeds.

If under warranty I'd be RMAing it as you may find it goes bad in the other direction eventually.

It could also be the airflow of fan through the grill. Or the fact as exhaust the fan blades are about 5mm farther away from the grill than when mounted as intake. This is because of the thickness of fan motor support frame on exhaust side of fan .. and of course the fan blades have to clear it to turn .. so there is more distance between fan blades and case grill when mounted as exhaust.

Loads of my fans do that, from various different brands, they seem to just not like been turned upside down, its never been an issue for me as i always exhaust out of the top and back and pull air in from the bottom and front as it suits my desk setup better. Like Tealc says that one is noiser than normal though, its normally only a slight noise.
