If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it. My PC has been making a really loud whirring noise, sometimes I get a message when I boot up about CPU cooling, I cant remember it off the top of my head, but I traced the noise to a small fan attached to the mobo. Im a noob so I have no idea what this fan does. Its not the CPU cooler, its on the bottom right (or near enough) of the board. Is this called a northbridge cooler or something? Like I said...noob! Can it be replaced, or am I looking at a mobo replacement? The noise is really loud.
Cheers.

Yip it'll be the chipset cooler. It was very common for its fan to die. Most people replaced it with one of these. Tho if you insist on active cooling for it then one of these would do the trick.

Thanks, any idea on how to remove it. I moved my 8800GTS out of the way and its held to the board by 2 punch pins (I think), but it feels like it is stuck down :(

Probably ASUS's usual gunk below it. Heat it up with a hair-dryer. You can snip the push-pins off if you don't want to remove the board.

Im crapping myself now. Took the fan off, plugged it all back in to see if it worked, and the PC made a horrible, loud high pitched noise and started beeping, so I turned it off, tried again and it did the same!
Ive ordered the Akasa cooler because it is small enough to clear the gfx card. If it does this when I fit the cooler I have clearly broken something :(

Can't really see what you would have broken. Did you apply some new thermal paste?

Yep, I would have thought it'd be ok for like 10 secs to make sure it booted up etc. lol, obviously not :( It was only on for 5 seconds before i turned it off.

I hope not. Do you have any idea what the noise could have been? Maybe I didnt plug the gfx card in properly? Not going to try it until I get the new cooler delivered on thurs hopefully.

correct me if im wrong, but would the high pitched whine and beep be a bios warning because no fan was plugged into the north bridge fan header on the board.

Yep you could be right. Maybe it refused to boot because of that. The cooler will be delivered on thurs so will wait until then to see exactly what Ive done to it! Thanks for the help everyone :)

Got the cooler today. I dont have any thermal paste but it has some preapplied. Do I need to clean the chip before applying/remove the leftover clear stuff from the old Asus cooler?

Hey guys, had to take the fan off as it wouldnt clear my gfx card, so its just the heatsink. the HS is pretty hot, but its still running fine. Do you think this is ok?

The original heatsink alone?
It will fry it's just a matter of time the mass of the original HS is too small to cool without a fan.
