Hello,

my 2nd cpu fan has started rattling recently when ''cold''..

When I start my pc it always rattles, and I have to smack it a couple of times to go silent. It then stays silent for the whole day.

It's not a cable that's stuck or the fan touching anything, I tested. I want to keep using this fan as it's one of my few silent ones ( before it started ratting anyhow and after a good smack). It's an original CM one that came with my case and I stuck it on as 2nd fan on my rad.

It it safe to just spray a load of WD40 in it to silence it? Re: fire or short circuit I mean or anything... Or does anyone elke have better ideas ? Grease seems a bit too solid and attracts crap ( I'd imagine a dust film sitting on it within a week).

I have WD40, ''Kroon Oil'', 4 stroke 5w40 oil, two stroke oil, silicone oil spray, joint grease, synthetic and semi synthetic transmission oil, copper grease and the blue ''heat resistant'' grease ( you get the point, basically any type of lubricant my cars and bikes and mopes use).

Which one is best to use to lubricate my fan ?

Not WD40.

If you had some 3 in 1 oil I'd probably use that. You'd want to the oil to not be too viscous but not too thin that it just flies off the spindle.

If the fan is flapping about on its bearing it is only a matter of time before it'll not respond to oil and will need replacing. Might be worth just replacing it now.

Cool, kroon oil ''univeral'' is probably best then, its not as viscous as grease and not thin either, main use is for doors, bike chains, locks, etc...

And yeah probably, but I don't replace stuff until they're really broken, if I can get another year out of the fan I'll be happy. I'm not a ''replace'' kind of guy but more a ''mend it'', with computers, electronics and transportation anyhow :p.
