Just built a system yesterday, which seems to be working fine.

Windows 7 Home Premium
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
FX ATI Radeon HD 5670 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Coolermaster Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU)
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H AMD 880G (Socket AM3) microATX DDR3 Motherboard
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)
OCZ Special OPS 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3SOE1600LV4GK)
LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

The fan is really loud though. I'm talking crazy loud. Louder when running a game or any software, but it's base level is pretty loud on its own.

Is this a symptom of something going wrong? Or is the stock fan just really loud on that CPU? Is there a software utility I can use to check temperatures or something? I did DL a little bit of software, can't remember the name, but I was only getting a temp. reading from the HDD.

Any thoughts guys?

The stock AMD fan is really loud (from my experience) It might be worth upgrading the CPU cooler when you have some spare cash.

For checking temperatures i'd recommend using coretemp or hwmonitor. It is worth noting that the hwmonitor results are more accurate than coretemp on amd systems.

It was running pretty quiet before I fired up the game, but since shutting the game down, it hasn't gone back down to that level. It's still just as loud as it was when playing, and the system's just been sitting idle on the desktop for the past 30+ mins

you could enable cool and quiet in bios. it will definitely make a difference.
I found the cpu fan a little loud, so changed it for an aftermarket one. I didn't find it much too loud though.

Also, use AI suite to set up a cpu fan profile

you should have AI suite as one of the programs on youe motherboard's support disc

I'm a bit apprehensive about tinkering in the BIOS or on the motherboard, as I haven't any idea what I'm doing. Knowing my luck I'd somehow shut the fan off altogether..
