Ok its time to upgrade my fan from stock to something a little better. Currently I have my E6600 running at 2.7Ghz where its idling around 30 - 32, If I push it up a little bit to say 2,722 Mhz the temp starts to rise to about 35 -36 idle and max according to CPU temp 51 under load. It comes back down again from that very quickly indicating that the fan isnt doing a bad job. However if I am to continue to push the CPU up to the 3ghz mark (and possibly beyond) im probably going to need a new fan.

I have been looking at Coolermaster

http://www.coolermaster-europe.com/...GP&other_title=+RR-PCH-S9U1-GP+Hyper TX Intel

and Arctic Cooler Pros but am unsure what will fit in my motherboard.

Mobo is a Asus P5N32-E Sli

Has anyone out there got the same board or similar and fitted a decent fan ??

The best HSFs are the Tuniq Towers followed by - in no particular order - Scythe Ninja [with new fan], Noctua or the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

The AC Freezer 7 Pro is the cheapest and will more than happily handle 3GHz. You can take your E6600 up to around 60C so you have plenty of headroom anyway, so you might not even need a new HSF.

Got the same board and coolermaster hsf running a 4300 at over 3GHz without any worries. CPU hits high 50's on occasion but sits at mid 30's idle.

Cool thanks guys I've played with it a bit more and have managed to get my cpu to 2.8ghz now. The temps are around 36 at idle and when I play a game goes up to around 45 - 50 (seems to be just affecting the idle temp not the max). Is there a application out there that will max out your CPU to give a better idea of my maxed out temp ? I don't think many of the games I have seem to push the CPU that much.

Orthos will max out your CPU.

Are Tuniq's Towers Quiet ? I take it by "No-one's gonna be able to mention competitors here" that overclockers aren't the cheapest then ;)
reviews seem to suggest that they are certainly not the quietest. If you read the forum rules, you'll notice that links or suggestions of competitors are not allowed. Overclockers are very cheap for a lot of things but obviously one retailer is not always going to be the cheapest for everything.

You would have thought it would have been in the interest of overclockers to allow people to mention other competitors (perhaps not link to them). At the end of the day overclockers could learn a lot from what other competitors are being mentioned on the forums because they could then see what sort of reasons people were going to other suppliers (Pricing / Availability etc).

In a limited sense market research :)

I guess that they provide the forums free of charge at considerable expense to themselves and therefore don't want people shouting "Oh don't buy from OcUK, buy it from XXXXXX instead, it's cheaper". Of course they could always consider price-matching where required

The best HSF is usually a case of personal preference. I can vouch for the Noctua HSFs as being inaudible even at high speed and they are better then the tuniq towers for temperatures.

They're a couple of quid more expensive but well worth it for the extra quality in production and they can fit on AM2 as well if you ever need that.

i have the noctua and i think its good but i reckon its being let down by the case fans in my Lian-Li PC-7 Plus... i've no idea what they are so its hard to know how much more i need...

anyone recommend a couple of replacement case fans that will lower my case temps and help the noctua out? dont want stupid loud but a bit louder than what i've got would be good...

might get a couple of matching noctua fans for the case and see how that goes... they push a class leading volume of air for their audio volume but that isn't to say there might not be summat not too much louder than can push more...

ideas?

Silenx IXTREMA are supposed to be very good. Going to buy one when paid to see what they are like. My 120mm CoolerMaster case fans are at 7V and although REALLY quiet I don't think they are pushing much air.

The Noctuas can either do 35CFM @ 8db or 48CFM @ 17db which is extremely quiet. However if you want more airflow, the Xilence fans can do 68CFM @ 21db which is still barely audible.

Ultra 120 is equaly as good as the Tuniq according to Anandtech, if not a hair better when overclocked, and the Noctua is about 7C higher than the two of them.
