I'm guessing I'm probably not alone in recently running into the issue where Windows Defender is quarantining FanControl.sys because of a Trojan.

I am struggling to decide what to do and wondered what others were doing?

As I see it the options are:
  • Add an exception to Windows Defender to allow FanControl.sys, it's no more of an issue than it has been for the last 5 years it's just that now more people know about it.
  • Find an alternative. The main option here seems to be Argus Monitor, but that's not free and for me would cost £24 for 1 year or £51 for 3 years as I use multiple PCs. I'm also not sure if it does all the stuff I'd like and if it's bloated with stuff I don't need.
  • Use the motherboard software. In my experience these are almost always horribly bloated and awful. Not to mention that they often seem to rely on motherboard sensors for CPU temp meaning they're not very accurate and thus fan control is guess work. Also lacks features.
  • Use the BIOS. No bloat but also no tinkering in windows makes it more awkward. Also has the issue where the CPU temperature is probably read from a motherboard sensor making it inaccurate. Also lacks features.
Any other options I've missed?

I forgot how bad it was in the days before I discovered FanControl.
