Fancy a change, ideas welcome..

I'd probably go for a 159 on the understanding that it isn't actually a very good car, but it doesn't matter because they look so fantastic. I very nearly bought the 2.4 JDTM model instead of my Jag, and although I know I made the right choice, I still look enviously at 159s when they drive past.

Honda Civic 1.8 Ti

Hatchback like the Mazda
5 Doors like the Mazda
Revvy petrol 140BHP 0-60 in under 9 secs
Looks great (Subjective) in either 8th (Rare and 3 door/white only) or 9th Gen

Fun to drive, but comfortable, kinda rules out most hot hatches...

You say that, although my Ibiza FR is harshly sprung, the seats generally make more of a difference to comfort for me than the suspension, and hot hatches tend to have better, more supportive seats.

If you like the Mazda, then a Mazda3 MPS would be well within budget and a bit different?

TBH in this situation I would most definitely buy a two seater! To be able to spend £10k on a car when you have no kids and only one other person to be in the car with you I would most definitely buy something that's not a hatch and doesn't have more than 2 seats. You only live once and should you keep this car for a few years it's entirely possible the next one will have 5 seats, be easy to lift children in and out of, be incredibly dull, boring and probably diesel. Do it while you have the chance matey.

I don't think a 2 seater is really going to work. We tend to use my car for any travelling and the GF certainly doesn't pack light. The convenience of a hatch, or at least something with a bit more room is just too appealing, even if its not used for that purpose too often.

I do seem to keep coming back to a BMW of some sort, can't say I really know what I'm looking for though. 1 series seems a bit weird as I'd probably want at least a 125i and that, I think, may have a not so great engine? Newer ones seem out of budget, and the older ones seem to be a ten year old car which is something I'd rather avoid.

Brother in law just sold his. To be honest I think the full fat sport offerings are going to be too hard for me, I have a bit of a dodgy back and can't say I have ever been particularly comfortable in any of his sportier cars. Think I'll need some convincing to go from a never go wrong Jap car to a French one too!

Dare I say it, recently these things have started to change my attitude to them.

Civic FN2 Type R?

Still prefer the Ep3 Type R but the FNs have really started to take my liking.

Bit of an update on this. Don't yet have the money as I'm waiting on a house sale to go through, but my car is slowly going kaput and it's getting rather annoying. I've been on several test drives now and have decided on a few changes.

So the original 10k budget still stands although I may be able to add to it. The Mazda however isn't worth anywhere near the 3.5k on autotrader, I'd be lucky to get 1.5 to 2k for it now. I'd rather spend less than this if possible as job security has also become a bit of an issue. I'm also now looking at Auto's as I can't for the life of me understand why we don't have more of these.

Have test driven the new Mazda 3, wasn't bad, dealer wasn't budging on price and I'm not paying list for one so ruled that out. Then went out in a Civic 1.8 V-Tec, much the same as the Mazda to be honest, but more expensive for what it was. I then moved on to the German's - have now test driven a 114i manual, pointless gutless annoying waste of time after telling the dealer I wanted something more potent than the Mazda, and it was even worse. Then went on to a Golf 1.4 TSI Match, 122ps version which was a bit more like it drive wise, but the interior was a massive step back from the BMW in my view, yet it was more expensive. I then found a 116i M-Sport Auto locally and found the car to be fantastic, with the only problem of it being somewhat out of budget :(

So, any recommendations of a decently spec'd, comfortable, reliable petrol auto for under 10k?

What about a Mk2 TT? The boot is actually pretty big with a hatch style boot lid, and with the seats down I have seen a full set of alloys/tyres in the boot! I have done numerous holidays in a Mk1 TT and fitted far more in the boot with the seats down than in a Focus/Golf with the seats up.

Only criteria it doesn't meet is it's a manual, but there are DSG autos out there.

If job security is likely to become an issue surely it's better to keep the Mazda until your job gets sorted.
Even if money isn't an issue you may find your needs change for the type of car you want.

At the moment the Mazda is refusing to start on a regular basis, yet every time I take it in to get looked at, it starts first time and I look like a plonker as no one can find anything wrong with it. This is both frustrating and is also causing issues at work as I'm starting to not make it in on time...

If I had 13k to spend on a car I would be looking at:

Jaguar XF
Jaguar XK
BMW 335

I have to put this in here or people will start wondering:

Mondeo TXS 2.5T with change left over for 1 or 2 holidays.

No need for me to worry about maintenance, my mechanic can worry about that.

I did 95k miles in a Focus ST3, surprisingly comfortable, ive since had an Audi A4 and Honda Accord GT, and the focus was just as pleasant on the motorway. Fuel was shocking though.
