Fancy a DSLR

I'm thinking it's about time I upgraded from my S9500 - which, imo is a hugely brilliant bridge camera and has served me well for 4 years, despite the command dial being broken. The lens capability has never been an issue.

I'd be looking for a bargain, not a brand new model - something a generation or two older as I'm not going to be using it for professional purposes(obviously). Canon 300d perhaps? Looking to spend as little as possible on a durable body a lens kit that I can get stuck into and will take higher quality images than my existing S9500.

Any ideas/suggestions on models or second hand price ranges? :)
 
No set budget in mind, I've really just started looking into it. Let's shoot low and say how much would £100-£150 get me, if anything?
 
I would say the D40/400D are not such a dodgy investment. Just these DSLR's are now old tech & Spec.
So pay a little more and get a least a Canon EOS 500D, not sure what a simular Nikon would be.
However most important thing is the Lens, that is the true area of spend !

This, DSLR systems are expensive, full stop. Yes you might be able to find a very old 1st gen DSLR in budget, but then you need to factor in lenses and extras to really get a benefit of an DSLR. A modern high end compact takes photos as good if not better than a Canon 300D for example.

In general, a camera body should be about 1/5th of the cost of the total system, with lenses taking up most of the costs. IF you want the same flexibility as compact camera and moreover, if you really want to use a DSLR for its intended purpose then you need to add function specific lenses.

Then there is the flash, filters, memory cards, software, bags, tripods and heads (which will happily set you back far more than even a mid range DSLR), remotes, insurance, spare batteries, cleaning kits.


As an example, my camera is about 1/10th the cost of my system.
 
Even forn a starting kit you are probably looking at £500 and up. Its the lenses that cost as with just the kit lens (usually around 17-55mm) a good superzoom camera will allow better functionality
 
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of the ongoing costs, tbh. Only the initial outlay. Like I said, I'm not too serious about it I was merely wishing to upgrade from my bridge camera. £500 for a camera and parts seems excessive to me at this point. I thought a DSLR body would be around the £100-150 mark and perhaps a standard lens included or circa £50 more.

I do love my photography and enjoy shooting. The s9500 and s2750 suffices. The shots we get seem of a far higher standard than a lot of DSLR users, I suppose it's user ability and composition, not the camera.

Even a basic kit lens would cost you around £150 to buy seperately.

And you're quite right...it's the users ability that gets a great photo :)
 
Second hand you can get a d40 for less than 200. Maybe consider a d50/70 for similar price as these will AF on non AFS lenses. Lenses without afs are much cheaper. I would suggest around 250 you should be able to get everything you need. I bought a 70-200 AF for 40 quid recently for my F4, and it works nicely on the D40 albeit with out autofocus
