Thinking of upgrading my aging media PC, do any of the i7 Haswells not require a fan? Im not talking about watercooling. Either just throwing the CPU in or having a case that acts as a heatsink maybe.

What will the use of the PC be? I suspect that an i7 will not be needed, but I might be wrong.

You can get cases which act as a heatsink, and there are a few heatsinks around that are designed to work passively, yes. But all modern desktop CPU's do require at least some form of cooling.

Though the case with heatsinks or small passive heatsinks themselves are only rated to cool low wattage CPU..

You are better of getting a air cooler with a silent fan IMO.

As acme says, if you need an i7 then you're probably going to want a fan too. If it's just a media centre PC than an i7 really isn't necessary.

Yeah its only really for a xbmc mitx pc. Was just looking to.update the old atom/ion motherboard to something with a little more omph.
