Hi all, noob query re: Fans, and their power supply methods / connections / types.

I need to hook up various fan cables to 1) watercooling radiator fans and 2) onto case fans. These number 12 120mm fans in total. I think I need to connect them directly to the motherboard to allow the motherboard to control the fans. I have 2 4-pin ports on the mobo, and 2 3-pin ports. Mobo is a z97x-soc force from gigabyte.

The 4 case fans will be on a 3-pin type connection. The 8 rad fans will be 4 pin and are intended to be PWM.

The question: what is the best way to hook them up given there are more fans than ports? I can see some fans come with y-splitters, some do not, you can purchase y-splitter cables, etc.

Have tried reading up on this a lot but it seems a confusing subject.

Any help / advice much appreciated thanks! :)

My problem is what socket to plug them into. Everyone seems to contradict each other when it comes to pwm and cpu_header and sys_fan etc.

I have an nzxt fan hub. It's great. It's plugged into a cha_fan header and all my case fans that have no room on the board are on it.

But like you there is no solid info on what headers to plug these fans into and why. I got a h60 cpu cooler and people advising to plug it into different headers than the guide that comes with it.
