is there a rule of thumb on fans and the top and bottom ?
how do you know which way to use for intake or exhaust ?

Heat rises so normally the top fan will be used for exhaust. Therefore the bottom will be an intake. The fans should have a little arrow on them indicating the direction of airflow. Either that or look at the fan blades and work out which way the air will be moving.

I wouldn't want one on the bottom though as i have carpets and it will bring in so much dust.

In general:

Front / Bottom = Intake
Rear / Top = Exaust

As to if you should have more Intake or Exaust both have "arguments" I have always believed in more Intake and found I get better temps but its really a matter to Trial and Error see what works with your case and componants best

i think i know what your on about.
which way the fan's blow or suck air ?
the side with the label blows out as if your looking at the label it will be blowing in your face.
i hope that's what you was on about.
