Hi

Just won a NES off a famous auction site and tried to start it up and nothing happens, no power LED lights up nothing.

I am aware of the common fault with these where you need to clean the cartrdige connectors but would this fault cause it not to power up at all? i presumed the power LED would come on and maybe get a blank black screen or something.

I have messeged the seller and am awaiting there reply but just wondering if anyone had any ideas. The seller stated item was in good working order at time of sale.

From memory if you try to start the NES without at Cartridge insideit, the red led would flash on and off. So you should see some signs of life from it.

Aye, from memory the power light would blink.
If it's not blinking it's quite likely imo that you've got a loose power connection, the mains adaptor is dead (I think it used the same type as the snes) or the actual unit is dead/faulty (internal fuse?)

Blinks red when cart is in but cant read it. Power units are the bits which normally go first. That's why on Milton Keynes market (a year ago but still same idea) had 10+ NES but no power adaptors.

Thanks for the replies. Will any power supply do as long as same rated and connection? I know someone above said use a SNES one but i don't have a SNES (i wish)

IIRC the NES and snes used an AC to AC adaptor rather than the more common AC-DC type (I suspect it made the timing slightly easier)

While the original adapter is indeed an AC-AC adapter, it is converted internally to DC, so any DC 9V-12V 600mA-1.3A source should work. A SNES adapter, which outputs 9V 1.3A DC, works fine. :)

Sorted it, got a new power supply cheers!

Next question: any tips on how to make the cartirdges fit better? I could only get north and south to play but holding it down in one hand and trying to play with my other hand, no good!

sounds like the console wasnt looked after that well, mine holds all its cartirdges on its own, although all this nes talk in making me want to bring my nes up here and swap out my ps3 for a free hours! how many games did you get? I have around 15 or so plus the good ole light gun too!

I got the console and 2 pads and gubbins with mario 3 and north and south for 10.00 so i did ok. I was playing Mario 3 earlier but now the whole thing is being temperamental so i played TF2 online instead hehe.

What games do you have/recommend? Even obvious ones

I didnt even know you could get that for it!!!!!

:p

You can buy new connectors and just pop them into the NES so the contacts are brand new and you don't have to keep blowing the dust out of the cartridges every two minutes :p

With mine it seems to be than i have to push the cart in and push the whole cartridge slot deck down and it's really iffy when it comes to staying locked down.
