I need somebody with a classic to answer some questions. I have been reading about the EU rule about the volume on the new classics, and how people report them being considerably quiter. How have you found yours? I plan to buy one ASAP if all is fine, but i just wanted to check.

My mother was complaining about my Step Fathers one (Ipod photo) about 2 days ago. She says it is so loud that she can still hear it when she has her new nano turned up to full.

Yeh I thought that, people seem to say its 25% lower, and tbf , mine doesn't venture over 60%(and thats when running etc.) If you have in ear earphones I think it will be fine.

Gonna buy it now

Mine never goes over ~60% volume. That's on a noisy commute on the Tube. I find it amazing that people listen to music so loud; the other day a guy sat next to me and i could hear his music over mine (which was as loud as i normally ever crank it when i'm in a foul mood). Madness.

Yeh, I am going to go for it anyway.

Going to treat me to some new headphones, my cheap creative earphones gave way today so going to get these

Don't hot link

and then also some cheap ish in ear ones again, but going to get them from competitor so i have a warranty this time

I think as people have said it's a headphone issue a lot of the time. The standard apple headphones are absolute trash.

Sennheisers are the future, trust me :)

The thing that annoys me most about my iPhone is the minimum volume, even on the lowest setting I find it hard to go to sleep if I'm listening to a podcast or something.

I have a Classic 160GB and I've never found the volume lacking. However I think the comments about headphones are right; if you use low efficiency ones then you'll need a higher output from the ipod to reach a given level. I use ultimate ears and I've never needed to go above 80% even on very quiet material on the tube.

The minimum volume setting on an iphone is fairly loud if you're quietly trying to sleep in bed and I tend to like to nod off listening to podcasts on a set of earbuds. Clearer now? :)

Or were you just saying what because you are deaf and it doesn't sound a bit loud to you. :D
