Hello

Any exchange admins out there a few questions.

What size mailbox limit have you got set?

What is the total size of all your information stores?

What type of industry and company size are you?

I want to do a bit of market research as we have limits set at 1gb but our stores sizes are about 150gb with some users reaching 10gb each. I have been saying to my boss that this is crazy, I just want some examples of other limits people use.

Thanks

Richard

You need an email archiving solution.

I used to support about 300 users on a 40GB mail store and that was a total pain until we implemented a proper transparent archive.

Oh, and educate your users.... Sending attachments to each other that already exist on the local LAN is a big issue. We ended up implementing Sharepoint as a workgroup tool so that they weren't constantly firing document revisions around to each other.

As has been said you are staring down the barrell of a serious problem, until about 6 months ago I was supporting an Exchange 5.5 system with a single 220GB mailstore it was a nightmare, we now have an exchange 2k3 system with a trasnparent archiving system that is keeping our mailbox store under much better control, the only problem being that we have effectively just shifted the data problem into the archive it hasn't really gone away!

10GB mailboxes are a big problem as the user will have no hope of managing that much data, good luck!

User education is key as they are the root of the problem, big attachments and automated reports were and still are to an extent killing us but you can't just ban them you need an alternative which is why we are working on a sharpoint deployment to hopefully move the document sharing back to a file store.
