FAO Justin/Sorry, another iPhone question

Been reading through the iPhone thread and I'm very tempted to get one and jailbreak/unlock it.

I've heard a few people say you should restore the iPhone to 1.1.4 before you start, I'm guess restoring to 1.1.4 would be exactly the same as just using the iTunes update tool (as long as 1.1.5 hasn't been release at the time).

Also, does iTunes ever automatically update your iPhone? I don't want 1.1.5 to be released and re-lock my phone :p

Sorry about yet another iPhone thread

One more thing... maybe you could link to the 1.1.4 firmware Justin just in case Apple release 1.1.5 in the future (and for restoration purposes? I've seen someone restoring in iTunes and it asks for a file to restore from?) - I doubt people will leave 1.1.5 uncracked... but just in case :)

I've FAOed this to Justin in case there are any updates you can make to the sticky from this thread :)

Craig.

Hey there, 1.1.5 isn't released yet, but when it is, I shall add a linky to 1.1.4.

You only need to restore the iPhone if you have already used it, think of it as a format, like you would do to a HDD. When you buy your iPhone new, it wont have anything on it, so just update :)

iTunes wont automatically update, it will ask you if you want to update, you can click 'download an install', 'download only' or 'remind me later'. (Or similar)

Don't worry, you will know if 1.1.5 is near release, insiders will usually find out first so you will be aware of anything coming.

Cool, thank very much m8 :)

Are there any tools about that could maybe backup my firmware after I have used ZiPhone and Boot Neuter? It'd save a bit of hassle in case I ever did do something stupid :)

iTunes automatically backs up your iPhone each time it's connected :)

When you press restore, you will have a choice to overwrite with new firmware, or restore back to a previous state.

Ah very nice, thanks again :D

[Edit]
Hmm, I just read the 1.1.4 update is ~165MB which will take ages to download on my 512k internet. Are there any official places I can download it before buying my iPhone so I don't have to wait on the day? Would it be possible to run a proper update and select my downloaded 1.1.4?

How will I know what firmware the phone is on when I get it? Can the info page be accessed without activation?

So I'll definitely have to restore if I download the 1.1.4 firmware beforehand? There's no update with file option?

Nice tutorial on the MacRumours site, thanks Matrix.

That's strange

I'll probably be using the restore function anyway to upgrade my firmware as I'm only on 512k here so will be downloading 1.1.4 manually before I get the phone :)
