So I've had enough of my Samsung LE37R41 LCD. The blacks are just not good enough, there is too much detail missing in darker areas and I'm getting 'smearing' that effects LCD technology that is really noticable to me.

I've got my eyes on the new Panasonic Viera 42" PX60. Worried about screen burn though. Are there any hardcore gamers here on plasma that can ease my worries?

Cheers.

Panasonic Plasmas are virtually bulletproof as far as screen burn goes.

i've had my 42" PV500 (HD) for nearly a year and have never seen any screen burn.

Kids play xbox / 360 for hours and leave kids channels on Sky+

Dont worry, it wont be a problem

What would you describe the quality of the 360 like through the PV500? Also, did you need to 'run in' your screen when you first got it?

Quality is STUNNING.

As for running in, take it off 'Dynamic' run it on lower brightness and contrast setting for the first 200 hours then adjust to suit.

Use a KDEP42XS1 Sony 42" Plasma Screen.

Picture quality is stunning, I much prefer Plasma to LCD and couldn't recommend it enough.

You'll have nothing but joy from the new Viera, it's amazing.

I'm only on humble SD plasma owner but can confirm the image quality is really superb, especially if you appreciate accurate colour reproduction, and the blacks come into their own on for example the graw night missions.

Never had any issues with screenburn either. Not sure what you class as a hardcore gamer but I've played PGR3 in the bumber view (ie rev counter in the same place) for 5 or 6 hours straight without a hint of screen burn. You may get momentary retention, which at first may give you palpitations lol, but it goes in no time - i only notice it if i've been in the pgr lobby then turn the tv off - theres a feint silhoutte of the outline left on the screen but it fades after a few mins and its never an issue in game (seems to only occur when switching off)

I had an LCD and switched to plasma and I couldnt be happier. As an allround technology for watching tv/dvd etc it really is noticibly ahead of LCD.

Thanks for the replies.

I went into my local AV store today, they had a PV500 running a HD feed. The colour reproduction was very very good, closest to CRT I have seen. Picture was very natural and no sign of artificial processing that plagues LCD's. I think they have a long way to come to match the PQ of plasma.

I don't think it's a LONG way, but Plasma are definitely ahead purely for the colours, they are richer on a Plasma and you can get really good blacks (especially on the Viera series).

Got a Panasonic 42PWD8 runnning 720p and letting it do the scaling. Looks superb! No sign of image retention yet either :) (touch wood)

Been playing PGR3 in bumper view as above ;)

yeah same here, got pv500 last may and never had any image retention problems. Panasonic must surely be the most resistant to this from experience and what is read on forums.
