Scuzi i'm doing some research on technological intervention to prevent air collisions. As an atc, what would you like to see being developed in the future?

I'm also focussing on systems that measure physiological factors of your body that could be used to alert important messages or warnings in the event of an atc being under a heavy workload for example.

lots of foam and rubber around the planes so basically if they do collide they just bounce off stuff, you dont need atc then, sorry scuzi, perhaps they will put u as a cleaner or something :p :p

Planes made out of the same material the black box recorders are! :p

I hope there is plenty of padding on the inside. ;)

Scuzi, are you constantly stressed from being an ATC? I know you get lots of breaks etc. but keeping track of that many planes must being mentally challenging.

I wouldn't say constantly stressed, constantly under pressure would be more accurate, however it can get very busy and 'non standard' at times especially with emergencies etc. That's when it gets stressful and we earn our money :p

It's mentally challenging, some days more than others. Summer is our busiest period and the traffic levels are already picking up significantly. Lets just say that when I come home from work I sit on the couch and vegetate for an hour or two :p

how much do you get paid, and how did you get into the job, what qualification do you need?

The pay is very reasonable. Starts off at £47k after training and works up to £90-100k. It's not just the pay that's good, holidays are excellent. I can get away with working 170 days in a year if I book my leave strategically.

Qualifications are trivial, you just need to have studied to A level standard, grades aren't even required. Academic ability is largely irrelevant, it's all based on aptitude, you either can or you can't do it. The recruitment and training process is like one big test to see if you can do it. Around 3% of applicants actually qualify.

Hi Scuzi. Can you state much on the current status of demand for ATC's in Britain? I will be studying a Communications Engineering course in September and was seriously considering an ATC career.
Cheers.

IIRC, Nats is aiming to recruit around 250 ATCOs per year at the minute. However, out of those recruited, as it currently stands, about 50-60 a year will actually make it through all the training.

BTW Gurdas, you've yet to contact me. It couldn't have been that important :p
