My friend has a rover 220 turbo and is wondering what the maximum safe boost to run through the engine is. He has a bleed valve and its currently boosting at around 6psi. How much more can he put through it with a standard engine without it blowing up?

He has taken it to 12 and slightly higher I think but he's running it at 6 because he doesn't want to break it. I've not been out in it but apparently its quite a rapid car, certainly compared to his 220 coupe :)
 
Do they chew through gearbox's when you up the boost on them? I'm not too sure on mileage etc of this one but he's keen to look after it and hoping it will last him a while :)
