restarted samba not VM - will try now

nope, still no joy - how to I find out IP?

At command prompt type

ip address

Look for something like "eth0" and then a couple of lines below should say "inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/xx", ignore the /xx at the end.

Fahmon error log says
Directory 192.168.141.141/ does not exist or cannot be read!

don't worry I've already give up for this month

My guess is it's actually windows as I setup my pc via my works net connection and 'exotic' server (don't even have a normal xp pro startup screen for a stand alone pc

What happens in Windows if you click on Start and then Run and then type

\\192.168.141.141\

and then press OK ?
