FAO those that work in computer/mobile forensics

Sorry I can't be of any help, but I only learned recently that networks record all of your text messages for the investigation of legal matters...

... so don't do your drug dealing via text y'all

By hard work and a bit of luck, or should that be hard luck and a bit of work.

I kind of fell into it rather than pursuing a career in IT forensics. Glad to be doing it now and it is a growth industry.

:

not just text messages. Been told Vodafone in the uk have an old oil rig in international waters where they store there voice mails etc to get around uk law.

I used to work for Derbyshire's Mobile Phone Forensic unit until August if this year. To be honest I just applied for the job that I saw on their website. I had a Business Information Systems degree and all they asked for was a Degree to a good level. I didn't have any previous experience in forensics. If you are applying for any jobs, make sure you take a good look at XRY, EnCase, Cellebrite and some of the SHU box tools that are out there. These are all commonly used in the field.

I'd also recommend doing it through the police as jobs in industry do pay much better but during my 2 years they laid off so many people.

and if you want them back you will have to pay 1 Meeeeelion dollars, Muuuhahahahaha

Muuuuuhahahhahahhahhaha.

I'm doing Security and Forensic computing at uni and a couple of months back we had a guest lecture from a guy at SOCA. Part of which was the implications of the rise in cloud computing and the problems its causing. It was him who mentioned it. No tinfoil hats required.

Actually, only one of the major UK networks does this routinely. The others do not.

OP, keep an eye on police force's own websites - given the current budget thing I doubt there'll be recruiting much, but the area is growing at an incredible rate within law-enforcement, and I imagine there will be new jobs created for people with your skills in the foreseeable future.

They hold them for 3 months, and can be used as evidence in court cases, they also store location data by using the phone masts to triangulate where calls/texts are made from.

I work alongside the forensics team at a large mobile company.

They are all ex-Police.

Oh, the rumours in here about Vodafone are quite frankly laughable.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I've bee told they have sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads, that patrol the waters around said rig for O2 spy sharks.

Well I'm glad your amused but I was just repeating what i thought was a reputable source. You kind of take somebody at there word when they are meant to be knowledgeable on a subject and your not.:(
