FAQ and OC utility question

Hi folks,
I’ve been trying to select components for a self build for almost a year now and you might rightly gather that I’m a novice. Choice and assembly is not a problem but the more I read on software settings and overclocking, it seems the more complicated things become. So much so that I’m now seriously considering changing to a Custom build with overclocking included.
I have lots of questions to help me decide and I know the first advice here will be to read as much as possible but there are two immediate questions which come to mind.
Your FAQ topics on, for example, Beginners guide and Memory are very good but were written 5 years ago. Replies bring the posting up to date in some respects but can I assume that the bulk of the text is still valid today after so many years of hyper changes to the industry?
Motherboards like Asus have what appear to be simple Overclocking utilities which seem to be brushed aside by these forums. I find answers like” It’s best to OC directly from the BIOS” and “Utility OCing is too conservative” . But would it be too bad for me who wants to start safe, and proceed gently gently?
Thanks for any help.
