FAQ: Gibbo. Intel P35 boards when?

I saw that earlier.

I was going to buy a QuadGT in the morning but I'm now going to wait til next week to see what happens.

DDR3 O.O

will it work with my p5w dh deluxe?

ill curse pcs if it wont, i only upgraded to ddr2 3 months ago payed 200 quid for my damn 2gb of geil :(

lol people wondered why DDR2 ram was so cheap? sounds like they are trying to get rid of a large backlog of DDR2 in anticipation of DDR3. . . .

DDR3 won't hit with any weight until next year.

The new Intel boards will come in both DDR2 and DDR3 flavours.

They're 775, but will need the new chipsets.

Ok cheers, Intel are certainly looking strong at the moment.

Finally, with regards to motherboard support, Intel isn’t making any guarantees about Penryn’s backwards compatibility. While Penryn will still use the LGA-775 socket that Prescott and Conroe have used, motherboard support will require more than just the presence of the socket. If the appropriate VRM spec is implemented, then Penryn will work on your LGA-775 motherboard, the problem is that motherboard manufacturers haven’t yet released information on which of their boards will support the Penryn VRM changes. If history repeats itself, you can expect very limited official support for Penryn in currently shipping motherboards and guaranteed support with boards based on Intel’s new 3 series chipsets (e.g. P35). We did see Penryn up and running on an Intel BadAxe2 board, but it had a hardware VRM modification done to it in order to properly support Penryn. Penryn may also be able to work on boards without a VRM mod, however at increased (potentially out-of-spec) voltage settings.

Sorry for all the Links. :(

Would there be any big reason for me to switch to the P35 chippy over the P965 chippy?

I doubt it. Not until you want a Penryn and DDR3.

not entirely true, firstly the companies are all promising massively higher ddr3 stocks on release than they had with ddr2, so prices shouldn't be as insane as when ddr2 kits came out. also memory in general is going througha very low price phase.

the issue is overclockability. in general the lower latencies are supposed to be offset by much higher frequencies. so if ddr 3 is coming with 6,6,6, x latency we want to see it hit (50% higher latencys, 50% higher clock) around 1200Mhz, but this does infact seem likely. 1066Mhz will be the official speed, but i would very much imagine that it will clock significantly higher than that. ddr3 1333/1600 are supposed to be out by early next year, and if any current mem can overclock to either of those it won't be bad at all. nothing to say they won't run tighter timings with more voltage either.

i don't think you'll be losing anything anyway, the main talk of lack of gain is if people have ddr2 1066 mem already, but its expensive and doesn' thave the lowest latency's around.

just have to wait and hopefully see some ddr3 mem reviews/overclocking previews come out hopefully soon after nda lifts. a bunch of review sites have said they have had ddr3 samples and ddr3 chipsets to play with for quite a while.

Hi there

We have some of these in our warehouse but are unable to set them up due to lack of specification/details from Asus.

Tomorrow I will get one out of stock and just copy all the info of the box and put them on the website. :)

I paid £130 for my eVGA 680i a couple of months ago

If I knew DDR3 was coming out so soon I would have waited *sobs*

DDR3?

P5K?

Penryn?

You mean you didn't wait for any of these? - you mug! Instead you got a 3.7GHz CPU running SLi right now at a pretty good price. You must really be feeling foolish.

Personally I'm waiting for Nebulous - the one after Nehelem - it should be out in 2009 and it'll run DDR4, it's a dodecicore and I'm waiting on the Intel chipset after Bear Lake - Marin Mount Vision - as it will support Penryn, Nehelem and Nebulous. There will also be a slightly better version - The Marin Mount Vision Pro but no-one so far is quite sure what you're paying the extra for :D

anyone who thinks DDR3 will be cheap is fooling themselves.

new tech is always on the high side :p

I know...

Due to naivetivity (is that a word :D) I assumed that the penyrn chip would run in the evga 680i due to 1333fsb :o

Obviously im wrong.

the worst part is it's so hard to resist it.

Is it really??

Does it betray you like a pc can, does it spit sparks in your face, blow itself up for a laugh, Fry you or just not work? :p

At least you get a good hit :D
