Hi Guys,

I have asked the gf to buy me Far Cry 2 for christmas, which undoubtedly means she will pop to a shop and buy it in a nice little box to wrap up for me.

My question is this: If she buys the game on disc, can I integrate it with steam as it would be if I bought it from Steam in the first place? ie being able to shift+tab to chat to friends etc?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

Not that I am aware of. You can do this with valve games, but non-valve games come with specific steam serial numbers for the steam copies IIRC.

I've heard that as long as you launch the game from Steam (as in add the shortcut for a non-steam game to it), you can use the steam community still... never tested it however.

Yup.

Whilst you won't be able to register the retail copy with Steam, if you add a non-steam game, you can use the steam community functions. I've used this with non-steam games like Urban Terror and Soldat, it works flawlessly :)
