Far Cry Primal performance review

970 and 980 are going to need some price cuts soon. They're getting slaughtered at higher resolutions and falling some way behind to much cheaper AMD cards even at 1920x1080 in a lot of newer titles.

Agreed, especially in the case of the 980. Many of which are still a bit over £400.00. The 390 is a steal by comparison.

Yeah I am glad I went with the 290 over the 780 & 970 now :p

Still annoyed that I didn't wait a few weeks longer as I could have got the 290 for £230 instead of £310!!!!

The 290X has always had the upper hand @2160p over the 980.

The 970 and 980 have never been good 4k cards.

NVidia cut a few corners with their 256bit bus and the cards pay for it @2160p.

That doesn't matter as much any more now that we have G-Sync and FreeSync. 970 and 980 doing just fine

The ones for Far Cry have been out a few hours, guru3d were using the new ones by the looks of things, as were techpowerup.

Crazy when you consider the gtx780 used to be equal to the 290 on release, maybe even a bit faster.

Never tried fc4, but really surprised how good this looks on the whole. I expected something half baked with minor stutter.

There are many users who don't have g/free sync though.

Yup the 780 had the lead by a bit "overall" back then and I was wanting it for a change + running cooler and quieter but the extra 1GB of VRAM + 4 games free with the 290 as well as being a bit cheaper was just too good.

coulda waited a little longer and had a 390 8GB RAM for £265 ;)

Great to see AMD just release a new driver with Crossfire support as well for FC Primal, this after last week as well when they released the 16.2 with The Division crossfire profile. Maybe things are looking up Nexie baby :)

PFFFFFFT! My 7850 2GB couldn't cope any longer especially with 2560x1080 21.9! :(

Yup it certainly seems like it  Hopefully that is the end of this dark patch for crossfire users.

I've been playing this tonight and it does not like too high a GPU OC - whereas elsewhere it wasn't a problem - the game would freeze. With a milder OC it's no problem but this isn't the card to get for the 1440p resolution. FXAA, most things on high, some on very high and I get 45-55 FPS. No ideal. However it's a fun game imo and I'll certainly revisit it after a GPU upgrade; I want to see this maxed out.

The lead is almost as large at 2560x1440 as it is 4K in many titles.

Quite a lot of titles are going the way of cheaper AMD cards at 1920x1080 now too, and not by small margins.

It's no longer just restricted to 4K. It looks like it'll be across the board soon for most new titles. That was my point.

@others - all those tests were on the new NVIDIA drivers.

so 390x is essentially the best graphics card at the moment,
kind of funny since people complained about it just being a 'rebrand' lineup,
I guess medium maxwell is not as superior as the sales figures would suggest
