When Far Cry came out, I quickly bought it and loved every minute.

I cannot remember my PC setup back then, but as I never have cutting edge hardware, I will probably have played it on medium/low setting as is usual.

I thought I would reinstall it because of Matto 4 (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17673042) and was pleasantly surprised to find the game now auto detects my latest PC as (high end) :D - It isn't of course, but as far as this game is concerned, it is.

I couldn't believe the difference. I stuck the SP game on "challenging" and started all over again. What an amazing game !! - I have been killed more because I am too busy looking around at all the detail.
I was having a gunfight on the beach (near the huts at the start), and stopped midway through to look at the fish. lol. they werent there last time.
Also have 5.1 instead of 2 speakers and it even sounds like I am in a jungle.

Anyway, as we are all waiting for new titles to come out, and you too played Far Cry on an ageing PC, and now have much better hardware - I cannot stress enough that you should go and have another look.
Feels like finding a new game again.

Yeah I first played it through on an Athlon 1.3ghz and a 5700ultra..I managed to keep the details quite high but ran it at 800x600. Even on that it looked better than anything else.

I recently tried it again on my X2 and 7600gt, not cutting edge, but far above what I first played it on. With it patched and running HDR and it still has the ability to blow a lot of recent titles out of the water..only a modded Oblivion can match it for outdoor graphics. Best of all it's still fun and challanging to play, despite the monsters.

Worth a revisit.

It's an awesome game. I'm just replaying it. Don't understand why people complain about the enemies.

It's one of the hardest and scariest games I've played. Most games I play, I'm not that concerned about dying because I know I'm smarter and harder than the enemies. Here it's a much closer thing.

Yep, I'm re-playing it again... for the 5th or 6th time now lol.

Excellent game imo.

Scort.

I've had it since it was released but never completed it...maybe I should put that on my ever growing list of games to complete  although I have just started playing Quake 4 again (another uncompleted game of mine) on the hardest level and DAMN is it hard

Ive got a little tip for yas.

works occasionally but i remember it when i used to do it :)....

The bit where u climb out of hatch onto ship deck, and there is a helicopter flyin about...

The thing that i used to do , was stay in the hatch. quick save it.. throw a grenade out the hatch and over side of boat at helicopter. after a couple of trys i used to blow the helicopter up without having to leave the hatch :).

made it a lot easier when not getting shot at! :D

I've started it about 10 times. And always get too fed up with the damn mutants to get any further.

The mutants that take a round of M4 to kill and have a habit of jumping 30 metres in one go kinda bug me :/

Yeah, it's kinda hard work, but still good. I quite like the scary side of it, having to stand your ground and unload in quick bursts (to save missing due to the spread) then quickly reloading to get the next mutant.

Gets easier when you get the bigger weapons like the OICW or AG36.

The checkpoint system they used was a bit inconsistent in terms of spacing, making some areas very frustrating.

There was a hack that enabled a quick save, or you could save through the console, but it could screw things up..I saved just after a tough fight, only to find the door I needed to go through, wouldn't open and so had to do it all again.

It was good until the Mutants came, then it's zzz.

I TOTALLY agree with that! The mutant rubbish ruined this game for me, specially the awful last level with that volcano and silly looking creatures blatting away all the time.

The best levels were the jungle levels with human enemies. In fact the developers would do really well if they focused a future game as a jungle-warfare outing as they have got that environment down pat.

But other than that - yea its got great replay value. And for those of you reading this who havent got it yet - its like £9 in the shops...and probably less by now :D
