...what is it all about, especially when references are being made to it in politics. Say for example, BNP is reffered to as being far right. I mean does the right mean positive, negative or what  Why cant they reffered to as being left or something.

So can someone in their infinite wisdom shed some light on this? Thanks.

Best site to cover it in all honesty, especially as the labels "far left" and "far right" are pretty meaningless these days in terms of spectrum as your stance can vary dramatically between economic and social issues.

On an economic level, right wing tends strongly towards a capitalist, free market economy, left wing tends towards state ownership, control and management of the economy.

On a social level, right wing refers to those who want to control and dictate to people, it can also involve racist viewpoints and discrimination. Left wing refers to those who are socially liberal.

Personally, I refer to myself as a economically right wing social libertarian. I am quite happy for people to do whatever they like (provided it doesn't harm others) as long as I'm not expected to pay for it via state enforced subsidies.

Social authoriarianism (social right) and libertarianism (Social left) are not dependant on holding a specific economic view, so you are generally better splitting them all off :)

Its an arrogant signature, as far as the accuracy of the content, who knows...

I think i better set the crap you and Benneh or whatever his/her name is straight. Getover my signature, if it hurt you so much then keep quiet. I dont see what's arrogant about what i said in it.

Sounds like an "uprising of the jealous one" against me.

Okay, lets have a political compass thread... why not...

I score...
Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.85

Very similar to Gandhi, I am in good company. Sometimes it seems that the most important values to a person are the ones that we say least about

I wasn't being personal and my comment wasn't an insult. To publicly declare oneself proficient in things that society respects is often seen as arrogant. You'll notice i also said that who knows how accurate it was, suggesting that I do not wish to judge you, say you are not intelligent, not black, not potential millionaire etc...

I'm just saying it can be seen as many to be boasting. Did you take the political compass test by the way?

Pretty much places you in the same place as me then, socially I'm at the same level but slightly more communist than Ghandi.

Me too, interestingly when I took the same test 2 - 3 years ago I was in the same area as Thatcher.

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: 6.13
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.28

Pretty much exactly where I placed myself earlier :)
