The UK having to reduce Corporation Tax to induce companies to stay or come is not exactly a ringing endorsement on the outlook of our economy though is it.

It's also less tax receipts into the coffers so more cuts/less deficit reduction

Germanys Corp Tax is 30%....doesn't seem to be doing them any harm

excellent so we cut corporation tax and that is no dubt going to be funded by the tax payer, so the money we were purportedly going to save by not paying the EU gets swallowed up to bridge the hole we are left with from having to cut corporation tax to keep companies here who when they discover can't access freely the single market will quit UK PLC anyway and take x thousand jobs with them thus lowering income tax take into the coffers also.

This is like a massive comedy of how to screw up your country but don't worry because we #tookbackcontrol.....................

While I don't think we are in the best position now I do think we will come through this ok, we are a resilient nation and new markets will open up and we will have no one holding us back.
If we could just stop all the tripe in newspapers and television showing so much negative rubbish like benefit Britain we could go a lot further

what new markets do you think will open up that we don't already trade with ? I hear we could trade oxygen with the Mars colony.....................

But unless there is some value to having low Corporation Tax why doesn't the entire World have 30%. The Republic of Ireland has a 15% rate are they just pishing away tax receipts or is there some other good?

I know the Laffer curve is often unfairly derided but it holds true as a concept if not a law. Ireland has attracted high paying jobs by attracting international investment. Would a 5% reduction in UK Corporation Tax makes us even more attractive undoubtedly yes. Would it attract more jobs probably. Might it repatriate to our own tax jurisdiction tax that is being avoided by paying it elsewhere probably. The same might be true of a VAT reduction.

The more economic activity that is done in the UK the more the economy grows and the more there is to tax. Or something like that.

I apologise for having an opinion that wasn't sanctioned.

How about; Brexit bad, PlacidCasual sad :-(

How much of a threat is the banks leaving the UK

https://next.ft.com/content/e0a5af3a-3ddd-11e6-8716-a4a71e8140b0

I've just read this. As much as I hate the banks they are essential to London and to the whole of the UK economy. I presume they will most likely stay in an eea or EFTA type agreement ..... But if we fully leave?

Exactly how important are they to the UK? What effect would it have on our economy if they moved to france

Closing this now, it's become more about brexit and less about the original context. We have a brexit thread already.
