Earlier this evening i remembered that FarCry has a 64bit version, so i installed the game, ran the patch and...

When the installer is running the memory usage gets to about 500 then drops to about 8 and gives me the following error:

1628: Failed to complete installation

I've downloaded the patch twice now but get the same error, anyone know why?

Cheers

I know I had this problem too you have to open task manager then kill all 64 bit processes in fact kill as much as you can of anything (32bit as well) then run the installer works 100%.

"Far Cry with additional content, higher frame rates, enhanced textures, longer view distances, and more objects with real-time physics."

I can't get it to install on my E6600 :( says "this is an AMD 64 exclusive patch"
yet i've read it can be installed on Intel 64bit processors, anybody know how?

edit: maybe a 64bit OS, I'm upgrading to Vista shortly :D

yes you need a 64bit OS... how else is a 64bit program going to work??? lol

I quote from somewhere else as you can't have installed it yourself ;)

How To Install The AMD64 Updates

When released, these updates required an AMD Athlon 64 processor and Windows Professional x64 to be installed, otherwise the updates could not be applied. However, it has since been discovered that is possible to apply these updates to FarCry on a system with a 64-bit CPU/32-bit OS (Win XP) and even a 32-bit CPU/32-bit OS (Win XP).

Whoop

Cheers mate, that worked perfectly ;) Maybe someone should tell people on AMD and FarCry forums about this fix :p

One problem though, i've got all the settings on very high etc, res 1280x1024 - runs smoooooooth as but looks no different. Looking at the pictures on this page, mine look like the 32bit version

works brilliant for me.

also people do note that on www.crymod.com there is a patch that allows you to use all the 64bit content, thats the upgraded textures, increased view distance, increased map terrain etc on the 32bit version.

farcry 64bit is really impressive, look at the quality of the rocks etc and compare to 32bit version. flappable to say the least.

Nice one NVIDIA_x64, Ill add this to the Ubi Forum installation guide... :)

How the hell does higher res texture, increased bump mapping and increased view distance have anyting at all to do with 64bit processing?

Its doesn't really it was an marketing restriction that AMD placed on the original installer that it wouldn't work if you didn't have a 64 bit os and an AMD processor - however you could add a switch to the installer command line which would make it simply extract all the files to a temporary directory and then copy over all the files on your 32bit cpu and os and enjoy the better textures etc .

Obviously though the 64 bit executable still wouldn't work.

Or to answer the question a different way, the idea was that the 32bit system couldnt support the extra draw distance, textures and number of physicalised objects.

Reality was that it can, but you do get an FPS hit...

Although mine looks a lot more vibrant and there a lot more plant life, i don't think bump mapping is working - is there a command line i could enter to get this working?

r_Quality_Bumpmapping [0,1,2,3] - 0=No bumpmapping, 1=Low quality, 2=High quality, 3=Very High quality. "Disabling bumpmapping removes the raised surfaces effect on textures, but improves FPS. Enabling it at progressively higher quality levels improves the realism of the effect at the cost of some FPS."

also

r_TexBumpResolution [0,1,2] - 0=Full resolution, 1=Half resolution, 2=Quarter resolution. "Affects the crispness and clarity of bump-mapped (raised) surfaces. Setting to 1 or 2 will increase FPS, but will decrease visual quality."

From here

Is all this 64bit gaming talk actually accurate? I mean, does it really offer the graphical benefits developers talk about?

Isn't ramping up texture clarity or normal mapping just putting more strain on the GPU? I really can't see how it offers better graphics. Who here is in the know about this stuff?

Yes, it definately makes a difference since the CPU can be a bottle neck for the GPU. But does it make enough difference to justify the hype?

Not yet...

Its still early days though and the benefits of 64bit kind of got lost in the noise of the more noticable improvements that Dual core brought.

Only when we see more games designed from the ground up as native 64 bit apps will 64 bit really be utilised, but with the HW improvements over time, and the gradual fade out of 32bit, will the real performance improvement every really be apreciated?
