I was set on getting a diesel but thinking about it, I do 50 miles a day on the motorway, currently driving a car that returns about 40mpg, costs 35 quid a week for fuel, even a car that gives 25mpg is only going to cost about an extra 700 a year on fuel, which is do-able....

so, any suggestions to get me started

one I have seen mentioned is an Astra GSi Turbo, 200bhp, 30mpg

Clio 182, get 34mpg ish out of my 172, not even remotely long journeys neither mostly town driving, can hit late 30s on a run apparently.

Well I'd have a high mileage Civic Type R, Clio 1*2, mint 306 gti-6 etc over an Astra. All should manage 30mpg on a run, the clio even more so.

Seat Leon Cupra R will do 30mpg (just) and is a darn site faster than a breadvan, esp with a few tweaks

But he deliberately wants something more fun than a diesel, not something with similar power delivery and average handling. ;)

You were too slow Tim originally quoted the 182 from my post, but did a ninja edit!

Aye, both great cars. 182 definitely has the economy advantage but that's not really why you buy a hot hatch.

Get a Civic Type R!

really? what few tweaks are these?

doesnt need any tweaks as its 225bhp and 205 lbs/ft as standard

my own example with a few mods inc decat, stainless exhaust remap and some breathing mods is running 287 bhp and 265 lbs ft

ps you can have mine with a fresh ticket 290bhp and a full set of ap coilovers for £3500 :) paint needs some work though (the dreaded ovni lacquer peel)

dont get your point though even in standard trim an LCR is quicker than a CTR by quite a bit. hell even my oil burner taxi will worry a type R in a straigh line

How about a Nissan 200sx? Ticks all the boxes, is very tuneable and will see very nice returns for not a lot of cash spent and it's a pretty comfortable drive which will be good for your commute?

No it isn't.

maybe all the civics i played with before ours was mapped were broken then :) added hairdryer sound effects dont make it quicker you know :)

i'll admit off the line its neck and neck but if you play in real world situations the cupra even in stock trim walks away from the CTR

Maybe. There wasn't a lot (anything?) between my old 1.6 Civic-R and paradigms revo'd LCR at donington. I suspect the Civic would be quicker in the hands of someone who can actually drive properly:p

To be fair most EP3 drivers I have come across can't drive them properly, I kept up with one driving flat out over the moors the other week in my Xsara. I would be a bit pee'd off if I had a 200bhp hot hatch and a gold granddad car was keeping with me :D

i will concede that the Hondas do handle well after having a shot of my mates EP3 and chasing a Teg down the twisties in the LCR. bear in mind our LCR is running a full set of AP coilovers is freshly bushed and is spot on geometry wise and i was really struggling to gain on the teg. in the straights i was on him like ocukers on new female members corners different matter altogether. personally i feel the CTR runs out of puff above 80/90 mph and starts to tail off wheras the LCR doesnt suffer that till well into naughty speeds. maybe the OP should go buy a K series'd metro ;)

clio 182 and type r both look like good fun options

what are they like reliability wise?
my only problem with these cars is finding one that has been looked after, would be a miracle if i found one that hadn't been ragged at some point, but a well maintained one for 4k might be pushing it ?

mate had a 180bhp cupra, quite liked that, not ruled a cupra r out either

is there no more turbo suggestions, would've thought turbos would have been the most economical
