hello guys

what bit of hardware plays the biggest part when loading a map for online play?

recently it has go very slow and maps take ages to load for some reason.

at first i thought the cpu, but then i thought it might be the hard drive, or could it even be the internet connection? all of which are guesses..

any suggestions thanks

Hi, well in my experience, it often goes in this order for loading the maps:

RAM, GPU, CPU, HDD, NET

My reasons for this is, first, if your ram is slow or insufficient the computer is going to take longer to store and fetch resources from memory, secondly, GPU; since most FPS games like Half-Life 2 start sending data about 3d resources, data etc to the GPU so it can render it.

And you can pretty much guess the rest. My reasons for putting net last is because even with a fast net connection, your loading time still depends on your hardware.

To put it bluntly, in my experience as a PC Gamer since the early 90s, RAM, GPU and CPU are the prime components that affect how fast a game loads.

my ram is corsair 800MHz

my HD is 10,000rpm

graphics as per sig.

this makes no sence:( something could be broken?

i'd start with defragmenting hdd, then check what other programs are running and close everything u dont need. Might be one of your programs downloading updates, antivirus, spyware checking....

Which game are we talking about here? All or one in particular?

good point, i just checked and i connect to cod4 maps very fast at normaly speed. the game it is lagging on is the game i play most often, call of duty united offensive (cod1 expansion pack)

ive already tried re-installing the game.

will tey defraging tonight see if that helps, although i dont understand why it would just be one game that has all of a sudden started to go slow.

thanks for help

CoD1 will load faster with faster CPU - it doesn't have any crazy large textures to load into GDDR, just models and whatnot that need to be unpacked on loading.

Same with most old games, eg Q3 - a faster CPU will help load times tremendously.

With newer games, the HDD becomes the bottleneck - I just moved to raided F1's, and my load times into TF2 fell drastically.

Whack up that q6600 clock!

ok got it sorted,

i defragged and did some scans and still not much change:(

but then i updated the graphics drivers it went back to the normal speed :)

thanks all for help all

haha.

im learning, just at a very slow pace.

ive just try'd to o/c my graphics card and everything froze resulting in a near heart attack situation.

i will get around to it dont worry:p
