Fastest card to pair with a Ryzen 2700?

Starfield is on the near horizon so it’s time to upgrade the 1070Ti. Is it worth getting a 7900xt given that I’ve no intention of upgrading my Ryzen 2700 any time soon? If not then what’s the fastest card to pair it with?

why are you refusing to upgrade your 2700? for an average price of a 7900xt you could get a good cpu and a decent gpu (for example a 6800xt and 5800x3d)

Based on the two videos below, it'll start to bottleneck well before a 4070 Ti, but as always: it depends on the game, settings and resolution.

If you're not keen on the 7900 XT, then a 6800 XT shouldn't bottleneck too much if you're playing at 1440p or 4K in newer games.

If you're playing at 4K, just buy the 7900 XT and crank everything up to max.

Bethesda games are immensely CPU limited especially as the complexity increases. The Creation Engine 4 in Fallout is very CPU limited(I run the benchmark thread for it) and the consoles are being locked to 30FPS,probably because of the CPU. Your CPU is unlikely to be faster than what is in a console.

So I wouldn't recommend anything more than an RX6700XT. But then I found my RTX3060TI was CPU limited by my Ryzen 5 2600 in Fallout 4.

Unless Bethesda Games Studio has made big improvements to Creation 2,and DX12 helps in reducing CPU bottlenecks then I still think getting at least a Ryzen 7 5700X would help.

Because I was still of the mind that a 2700 was a good CPU! Maybe not... If I have to upgrade my CPU then am I right in thinking that my motherboard can take upto a 5 series Ryzen?

EDIT: I'm hoping for 4K@60 at least but this will depend on the game itself

Yep, update the bios and drop a 5800x3D in there and you're all sorted.

Its perfectly decent enough now....just its a Bethesda Games Studio game, and they tend to be CPU heavy if the engine gets pushed too far. Starfield might break the mould but I doubt it.

You're behind the times. It is still a decent gaming CPU for a midrange system, but with a high-end card a 5600 is MUCH faster (literally double the fps in some cases), which can still apply even at higher resolutions, as you can see from the videos.

Thanks all. I've ordered a 5700 as that seems to be the sweet spot for my budget. At the moment it looks like I'll get a 6800 graphics card or equivalent. Still got three weeks to decide on that side of things.

Slightly OT but I’ve just built a new system for my son and paired a 7600 with a 6800 for 1440p gaming. I think a 5700 and 6800 would also be a great match.

I’ve ordered a 6800 XT as it was an unbeatable price. I play mainly indie games with only the occasional AAA title so I’m expecting most games to run at 4k@120 for me. We’ll soon see as it should arrive today

Just make sure you have SAM enabled in the bios, it'll really help with overall performance.

What’s SAM? Just so I can find it. I was in the BIOS earlier on and don’t recall seeing anything like that.

5700x installed and waiting on the GPU to turn up. Of all the games I play it’s only Starfield that I doubt won‘t make 4K@120. I’m hoping for 1440p@60 with ultra graphics but we won’t find the answer to that till it’s out
