Fastest Gaming Laptop

Hi

I need some advice please.

Looking for a very fast gaming laptop or I may build a desktop, still not 100% sure, i think it will depend on price/performance

My work provided me with an Acer 5553G laptop, quad core phenom, 5470 Ati graphics, nice little machine, plays games ok but I'm looking for something much better.

I have a budget of around £2000

It will be used for games only, 17" or 18" screen, don't need blu-ray etc.

Just the fastest graphics you can get just now, I'd like to buy in u.k also

Your budget is good enough for an Alienware M17x, the top spec of that Laptop would be about 2k which I find insane for a Laptop.

I'd go for building your own rig and save yourself a lot of pennies.
 
My advice: Buy a reasonable gaming PC and and a reasonable laptop

Seeing as your work has kindly provided a nice laptop, I'd just use the change for a big monitor.

Gaming laptops are too heavy really to be portable, and break/die quite frequently. Make sure you get a decent warranty (maybe extended) and have a think about how much you will be carrying it about.

If it is going to sit on your desk at home, why not just use a PC?

I just looked at that laptop with sli graphics around £2300

As you say its a lot of cash, the last desktop I had was a 3800 x2 so I'm well out of date with whats hot.

Cheers for the input

I am a bit worried about spending so much and then it dies on me, i suppose with a dekstop its easy to repair,

What would you guys recommend on the desktop route? I suppose i can get something way faster that a laptop for a lot less

I have a samsung le40c750 tv so I'd like to be able to use the pc to that through hdmi

Firstly it would be a good idea to consider the Sandy Bridge and Bulldozer? Chips coming out early next year.

Post a thread in General Hardware for a Spec-me with your budget, you will get quite a few hits there :)
 
I know you said you don't want to buy a laptop anymore,

however you could wait till the new range of processors comes along (Sandy Bridge) and hopefully more powerful graphics cards.

There is always something new coming, so do you never buy anything? :p Seriously, OP, don't just take my word for it. I am a self confessed "gaming laptop " sceptic. I like my gaming done on a proper keyboard, with a proper mouse, with proper headphones, in front of my 24" monitor sat on my proper comfy executive chair :)

Hopefully more people will chime in with suggestions and thoughts

Hi mate

I haven't played a game in years, my work gives me a laptop and I'm hooked again, all my gaming days in the past was on a desktop, I have decided on a desktop it makes more sense.

I've been playing games with this laptop in 3 places at home, that's why I wanted a gaming laptop for ease of moving around, next problem for me now is where to setup a desktop :D
 
I don't really agree with the comment about laptops dying? I've had three gaming laptops now, all of them have had the daylights thrashed out of them and none of them have died on me yet.

From what you've said you wanted, a gaming laptop sounds perfect for you! You can't beat being sat upstairs, then deciding that you want to sit on the couch and play instead. Because all it takes it to close the lid, move downstairs, get comfy, and carry on. :)

I had a 17" that was perfect on my lap. I now have a 15" and to be honest it feels miles lighter and doesn't get as warm as my old one.

For gaming, you'll get a lot more bang for bucks in a desktop, it depends if you can live with a desktop (desk size), or not.

If you decide to go the desktop route, best is to head to the general discussions for build ideas. But I still recon a build around a i5 quad and a £200 gfx card will be your best bet.

If you do decide to go with a gaming laptop, I don't have much experience with them.

OP don't spend £2000 on laptop. In the long run you will be disappointed as laptops heat up quicker than desktop and are not as reliable on performance. Spend on desktop definitely and maybe wait till sandybridge come out or amd bulldozer though not sure what is the release date for latter.
