Fastest HD6870

Guys, i've made my mind up. I am going to buy a HD6870. On overclockers site this card looks the fastest.

I have seen some 2GB ones on Fleabay but they are from over seas.

Sois this card the best one out there atm? out of the HD6970's

Personally I'd buy the Asus card as it's £11 cheaper and comes with an Extra years warranty.

I've ordered the XFX6870BE as it's already at 940 core and 1150 memory, so should easily reach 1000/1200 without touching the voltage *yet

GTX470 overclocked by 100MHz (well, 93MHz) is quite a bit faster than a 6870 overclocked by 40MHz. Not only that, the GTX470 still got about 100-150MHz of overclocking headroom, whereas the XFX 6870 will only have around 40MHz overclock headroom left.

Dude, numbers don't mean much as all and hardly reflect real worth performance in gaming. Comparing different architecture cards only base on the spec and numbers is like that is like comparing apple with orange.

Fact is stock speed GTX470 and 6870 ARE pretty much on par with each other in terms of games benchmark results (with the 6870 a couple of frames ahead and behind in some games), and the overclocking gain on GTX470 is greater than the 6870 because of it lower default clock speed. And average GTX470 can overclock from stock speed 607MHz to 820~850MHz (213~233MHz overclock), whereas average 6870 would only overclock to 950~980MHz (50~80MHz overclock).

At just 700MHz, GTX470 is already as fast as 5870 speed (and faster in some games). 6870 overclock from 900MHz to just 940MHz would still be behind 5870.

I did. But when I post that yesterday, the Gigabyte GTX470 SOC was on offer, so I suggested it merely as an alternative which he could consider.

And with the offer's gone it's matters not to the OP anymore. But I have to response to dave_beast's post because he's accusing me of making a mistake.

I'm awared that average 6870 can overclock by 75MHz no problem, but if we put it as %, it is just 8% overclock, whereas the GTX470 from 607MHz to 700MHz, that's 16% overclock; overclock to 800MHz+, that's 33%+ on overclock.

I doubt 6870 can overclock by 33%+ (1.2GHz), given it's default high clock speed.

And the 940MHz XFX6870 BE at £211.50 is just way too expensive to justify the 40MHz overclock (4%). Would be better off getting the HIS 6870 with Modern Warfare 2 for £15 cheaper at £195.

Em...how is you yourself overclocking the 6870 to 1GHz relevant to you accusing me of being wrong about GTX470 at 700MHz being faster than 6870 at 940MHz? :confused:

The Gigabyte GTX470 SOC's factory overclock from 607MHz to 700MHz is 15.5% overclock, whereas XFX 6870 BE's factory overclock from 900MHz to 940MHz is just 4.5% overclock. If you agreed stock clock GTX470 is on par with stock clock 6870, why is it so difficult for you understand that GTX470 at 700MHz would be faster than 6870 at 940MHz, considering it is 15.5% overclock vs 4.5% overclock?

And let's face it, overclocking is one area which 6870 cannot beat the GTX470 on. Majority of GTX470, if not all can overclock from 607MHz to 810MHz and beyond, which is 33.3%+ overclock; 6870 overclocking from 900MHz to 1GHz is just 11% overclock. 6870 would need hit the 1.2GHz mark to reach 33.3% overclock, which most, if not all 6870 wouldn't be capable of by using normal methods.

yh but realistically with OCing anycard, don't you get diminishing returns. I have seen 10% ocs with 1-1 fps increace, what's the point?
