Fastest networking without going totally daft... ;)

Guys I love the brains on this forum - great thoughts, never would have got these ideas!!!

Few thoughts - I'm a lazy one so I think I'd want to stay with Synology as I have quite a lot of their stuff running around the house. Not impossible to shift, but would take some extra effort.

I think the DS1522 looks pretty interesting, so maybe that route would get me to 10gbe without massive effort??

Before you buy a new NAS, NVMe drives for it and new NIC’s, switches etc. have you considered you’d be well over a grand - realistically getting on for two - better off just having local NVMe storage in the PC’s? Also 5e will easily do 10Gb over the distances being discussed.

Yeah out of interest I checked the price on the 5 GbE NICs I bought back in 2020 and they're 50% more than I paid then. 1 x 2.5 GbE was only a tenner less which is why I just bought the 2 x 5 GBE NICs to play with.

Back then the 10 GbE was double the 5 GbE but at least they haven't gone up 50%. I think 5 GbE just isn't that popular so may just be skipped by OEMs.
