fastest sd for os under 100£

64GB Crucial RealSSD C300 can be had for just over £100, well worth spending the bit extra if you can.

Corsair Force 40GB @ £97.98 inc VAT

OCZ Vertex 2E 40GB @ £99.99 inc VAT

These use the same controller, sandforce sf-1200, anything cheaper is going to be a lot slower when it comes to writing.. I think these are very reasonable, and are worth the extra £30-40.

If you have sata-3 on your motherboard, get what speed recommended (Crucial RealSSD C300)

I don't think the intel-v 40gb is a good option, compared to the 80gb version it doesn't stack up..

is ther anything special i need to do with ssd;s or do i just plug em in like regular hard drive and install windows

does formatting degrade an ssd?

Just let Windows create the partition and you should be fine. Under Windows 7 Trim is enabled automatically, although you may need to run the WEI test to do so, I forget.

Even on a SATA2 board I'd still get the 64GB C300 for £112 over the OCZ or Corsair. It is considerably larger and has faster reads.

WEI = Windows Experience Index, It is basically a rather basic Windows benchmark tool built into Windows 7.

TRIM info here = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM

I'm sure someone will correct me if it doesn't need to be run to enable TRIM, I've not really tried.

Either way to run it, Start, Computer, System Properties and click the Windows Experience Index link.

Updated my last post with a link. Basically it maintains performance automatically when used with a compatible operating system like Windows 7.
