Ok I hooked myself up with a Belkin Wireless G Nimo Router.

Ive got a laptop (Dell XPS 1710)
and a Desktop pc networked together...

While the laptop is sat on the desk I plug in the Ethernet lead to the router..... Transferring a JVC HD demo for example maxes at 9mb/ second....

while using the wireless card built in I get the same speed....

is there a faster way to transfer files to and from the desktop and laptop ?

Take the laptop HD out, fit it into a USB2 enclosure connect to PC, then copy and paste files. Or use a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and connect to your motherboard IDE controller.

Copying data over a 100mps LAN is pretty quick though, copied 200GB over the LAN fairly quickly, although HD to HD is much quicker.

yeah thats kinda of a leave your computer on over night task

You could try creating a simple p2p network using a firewire cable. That would give you 400mbit. The laptop also appears to support gigabit ethernet so you could take that route.

when using Firewire cable are you just able to see the other drives Via my computer ?

The firewire port on the Dell laptop is the smaller size and my desktop is the larger (powered?) firewire.... I gather a cable like this is normal - nothing fancy required ?

TIA

Get a 3.5 HD enclosure with external SATA or eSATA, and get a SATA card with an external port for the laptop and PC. Alternatively use Firewire 800 or 400. Would be expensive getting all that though. Personally I use a USB 2.0 external HD and just live with the slower transfer. It means I don't tie up both machines with large transfers.
