I've got a laptop with no OS on and the hdds on it are in fat32 so i cant install vista on it. How would i go about changing it to ntfs?

Boot from your Vista DVD and run through the setup?
You will be able to delete the partitions and re-create them as NTFS.
You will lose all data on them of course.

If you need to access the data then the easiest method would be to boot from a Linux LiveCD.
Then copy the data you need onto a USB key, external drive, network share, DVD, whatever.
