My son moved home last year and has gotten into his gaming and video editing. He's been using an Intel i7 3770 rig and wanting to upgrade for a while.

We are transferring his GFX an PSU across. These will be upgraded latter when he’s in a position to do so.

Together we have spec'd this rig up, been shopping and the last few parts are arriving so we can build. Thought I'd document it here

Few parts have arrived. It’s been a while from me doing a build, use to do ten a day at one stage. Things have moved on loads.

I got the gaming e board rather than the f. Wanted wifi and also it came with a usb-c header for the front i/o. Gaming F didn't have the usb-c header..but can't argue with the price you paid.
Also got the 5800X also(£310 so you beat me, though bought mine 6 months ago), the 5000X case, so slightly bigger, bought the standard Vengeance rgb ram rather than the SL(which is a lower profile...did that so could buy the 2 dummy ram sticks for £28 and have all 4 slots filled), and I opted for QL120's rather than LL120's so have the rgb on the rear of the fan as well as the front...oh, and seeing as 5000x, went for the 360mm aio on top rather than 240...got the 150i XT Pro from someone stripping out a pc for the gpu for £66. Bought 2tb SN850 for my nvme. You're going to have a great system once built. Looking forward to seeing some pics when done. I managed to snag a 3080Fe for the gpu..only way to get a card at a decent price.

He found the mobo via Facebook Marketplace. I didn’t think about the USB C option. Have checked and he doesn’t use anything with it so nothing lost but I see he could use a USB 3 internal adapter for it.

AIO was a hard one. I would have gone 360 and front mounted it but then I saw a post about the heat etc and looking at opted builds they fitted the rad atop. So idea being cooler air comes into the case and then heat is out inc that CPU heat. 240 I think will be fine. The fans are nice and powerful.

Card wise he’s got a 980Ti for now. He’s got to earn and save some before he can get anything.

Some more parts arriving today fact all of it. We’re going to build mobo, cpu, ram, ssd, outside of the case. Along with the AIO. This can be fired up on the bench and tested to make sure it’s working, if BIOS needs to be flashed which I am expecting it will. Might install windows at this stage just to the point it’s installed and reboots.

Todays the day. Once I’m back from fixing my car.

so a very quick question is the mobo. Any settings in BIOS to apply or is default everything okay?

I installed windows 10..win 11 requires diff setting i think, as when thought about it, went to windows upgrade page and said my pc not capable if installing win11 as doesnt meet criteria. It obv does, but does mean i would have to alter some settings. I forget which at mo am afraid and out and about

Morning Craig, thank you. Will be bench building mobo etc on the box and installing Windows to make sure it’s working. I’ll enable XMP right away before the install. Hopefully the default BIOS supports the CPU. If not then we got to flash it

when you go into bios, go to AI Tweaker, then enable D.O.C.P (for some reason call it different thing on AMD...means Direct Ocerclocking Profile), then save and exit..bios will take reading from Ram modules and adjust accordingly..if you go back into bios you should see new timings

Perfect that worked thank you. Wow this things quick! Very very impressed.

Not sure if temps are right. Jumps around a bit and high. What would be the proper way to check temps, then stress the system out.

We ow you a beer or two for all your help thank you. So I ran R23 and here are the results. The only changes we have made was as advised to go into bios, go to AI Tweaker, then enable D.O.C.P. This has set the ram to 3600mhz. Everything else is stock.

So would I be right in saying this hit 81.1c at the max on the core?

Can’t see the PSU only the cables. So a black one is okay. Defo needs to upgrade it. Will depend on what his new card will be as well.

If you go to corsair website for corsair rm white and flick thick the images you will see white cables.

850w covers all bases if you get one before new gpu.

He didn’t do a bad job.

the rm850 to RM850X...difference is capacitors in the 'X' are japanese as opposed to chinese in the non'x', with japanese being better. both come with a 10yrs waranty though. Also Corsair have released new 2021 versions...these come with a more square exhaust design made of small triangle..in theRMX series some of the parts have been upgraded and the fan was changed to magnetic levitation fan..under load it gets loader than previously(haven't heard it on mine yet, and fan doesn't spin until you hit a certain power draw) but it's far more durable so should last longer..not much said about the new RM series, but guessing they've changed the fans there too...example below shows the rm1000x(as old and new were same colour, not as these are the ones you should get), with circular design for exhaust and new square design below for new model(left old, right new)...same design goes through whole range of rm and rmx series..so you know if you getting old design or new(plus new matches design language of the 4000/5000/7000 series case)

So this was slightly unexpected and naughty. Nice upgrade over his 980 Ti. Someone locally was selling it, brand new.

So what has this all cost

Not bad for £1670.90, just shy of £1700. Windows 10 Pro was free as I got some COA's. Will try and fit the PSU and GPU tomorrow night, wife wants some DIY doing!!
