Fatty MTB as first bike?

I live on the edge of the New forest and have been toying with getting a hardtail MTB for riding trails and generally just bombing around. My intention is to build the bike (rather than buy pre built) and so spread the cost and also learn as I go. I'm looking at building around an On One frame and they have a good deal on a Fatty Trail frame. What are people's thoughts on having a fat bike as your main rather than a standard 26 wheel based frame?

Personally would rather have a normal frame or a +frame.

You'd be better trying both to decide though. Also you'd be cheaper buying outright than buying bit by bit, unless you're going 2nd hand.

If you are looking for cycling fun, rather than pure speed at a specific cycling discipline, they are great fun and very versatile. Right now, my Voodoo Wazoo is my main bike.

The Fatty Trail for ~£1000 in the latest edition of the PX sale is a great price, I could see why you might like to try to build up your own, but it will get very costly. For a start, the Fatty Trail is geometry adjusted for a suspension fork and the Bluto typically costs ~£400 alone. My Wazoo cost me just under £400 in total in a sale and using some Xmas pressie vouchers!;)

The full Fatty Trail bike for £1000 is good value, you could have bought it in the last sale for under £900, but it is still a nice price now.

There have been rumours of a bigger framed 18" Calibre Dune coming out this spring for a while, making it very attractive for under £600, especially given its weight (closer to ~14.5Kg); upgrade-ability; £100+ worth of Jumbo Jim tyres.

A 27.5"+ front suspension hardtail will be more versatile, and +tyres are pretty fat anyway, they are kind of half way between normal and fatty.

Thanks for all your advice. It looks like I'll be heading down the non-fat route and aiming for a do-it-all hardtail. After researching on-line (I know, its no replacement for actually sitting on a bike but I got to start somewhere) I think this will be built around an NS Surge frame but am keeping my options open until I actually buy.

PX are messing with the sale prices again and you could get a full carbon frame/fork with an upgrade to a "chewy" Nuckleball carbon bar for <£1000.

They are also having website fails again, making out you can knock £200 off a Fatty Trail, that would bring it down to £800 for a Bluto forked alloy framed fatbike. But the code does not appear to work.

You haven't mentioned a budget at all?

I haven't got a total one in mind. I'll be buying the components as I go so it will be a few pay-cheques until it is finally together. Past experience has taught me that if you buy cheap you buy twice but at the same time I won't be going crazy and buy top end kit, just looking for a good balance of quality / price.

A little out of reach for me at the moment :)
