Was speaking to my dad last night and we've decided to buy a fault code reader to troubleshoot any issues with our cars.

His car is a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7, and mine is a 2003 Jaguar XJ6 3.0. We want something that can read and clear fault codes easily and reliably.

I've tried plugging a cheap fault code reader one of my friends had lying around into my car and it didn't seem to work at all, so I'm guessing I'm going to need something a bit more advanced than that. I've never really looked at anything like this before and there's an overwhelming amount of choice and I'm not quite sure where to start.

Some seem to use bluetooth, some seem to be standalone units and some seem to connect via USB or even parallel. Any of those is fine by me - I've got an old laptop with a parallel port which we could use, but I'm not sure which is best.

Can anyone offer any advice?
