A relative's Toshiba Satellite C50-A-19T has slowly developed a fault of freezing intermittently, and the laptop takes a long time to boot. I'm going to tell them to buy a new laptop, but I would be interested to know any tips to see if this one can be fixed. Does anyone have any thoughts on likely cause, I'm thinking hard drive, and what could be tried?

Thanks

I agree the HDD should be the first suspect. Tell them to get all their data copied off to USB stick or whatever as it could fail completely at any moment. Give 'em a good scare. ;)

A new laptop could only be an improvement over something with a CPU benchmark of under 1100!
