very generous offer but iv fixed it 
after giving up and packing up i looked down at an 8 pin modular lead with a label on saying pci-e and thought hmm i wonder if thats what i was suppose to of used on the 3870x2 and it was, turns out i was using the 8pin atx lead for it....doh
all up and running now
