Faulty coolant level sensor?

Hi I have an E46 330ci and the coolant warning light keeps sporadicly coming on. Generally this occurs when the engine is cold.

The coolant level indicator suggests that its at max level. Its due for an inspection 1 soon so I'll ask BMW to check it out but just wondered if anyone has had any similar issues.

I have also never had to top this up, I'm guessing this is because its a sealed system and shouldn't ever need topping up?

So you think this is more to do with a faulty sensor rather than a problem with the coolant system itself?
