Faulty drive on PS2

My neighbour's son brought round his PS2 which he says is going wrong. Basically, he bought a new game (God of War II) which wouldn't load on it; he took it back to the shop and they replaced it; that wouldn't load either. He mentioned to them that over the past few months, it has been taking longer and longer to load games (e.g. Pro Evo) from disk and they said that the laser in his disk drive probably needed cleaning.

Does this make sense? Should he buy and try a laser head cleaning disk? Can one replace the DVD drive in a PS2?

Thanks for any helpful replies :)

This is a well known problem with the PS2. Sound's like the laser is on it's way out, you will eventually get disk read error's all of the time.

You can try to clean it which may solve the problem but I think it's the laser. If the system is out of warranty then dismantle the PS2 and give it good clean rather than a head cleaning kit.

You can buy replacement lasers on ebay which are pretty simple to fit, you just have to know what model PS2 you have.;)

I've had a look at the PS2 and can't see where I would open it up, I can't see any screws. Since it isn't mine, I don't want to damage it. Any hints?

Yes their under the black rubber feet underneath the console. Really easy to open as the top just comes off.

Is it the slimeline version?

You won't need a new laser, just to tweak the pot a little, there will still be lots of life in it.
